MICR-less RDC utilizes any regular scanner, such as those in fax/copier/scanner/printers, to create front and back images of checks to be deposited. A special MICR scanner is not needed.
For low-volume users, it provides the convenience of Remote Deposit Capture without the need to plug in another device and find space on cluttered desktops. For the bank, it removes the need to provide an expensive scanner for low-volume users.
The customer scans a front image, which appears in the front image window, and then turns the check over and scans a back image, which appears in the back image window. The amount of each check is entered. When good-quality images of both sides of all items are ready, the deposit is sent securely to the bank over the Internet.
When the images arrive at the bank, an expanded CAR/LAR optical recognition process adds the MICR line data and double-checks the amount and the image quality. The system also checks to be sure the items have not been deposited before and adds them to the fraud detection database. This ensures they will be caught if they come through again as part of a teller deposit.
After the items are processed at the bank, a deposit receipt is prepared for the customer and sent back via the same secure Internet link used to send the checks. It displays in a window on the customer PC and is added to a database for future viewing and printing if desired.
Users may also maintain a complete database on their own PC of all activity on their accounts. The deposited check images with full MICR data, as well as images of all debits and checks in regular deposits, are emailed each evening, utilizing strong public/private key encryption. They are encrypted at the bank using the customer’s public key and placed in an email attachment. Opening the attachment starts a process which decrypts the data using the customer’s private key and adds all the images and information to a database on the customer PC.
The system can be deployed without a visit to the customer. A login and password are provided which allows the program to be downloaded from a website, and an install wizard installs it on the customer PC. A customer-initiated secure direct Internet link allows MICR Automation Support to see the customer PC and work out any problems.
MICR-less RDC, in conjunction with comprehensive fraud detection, regular RDC, and Remote Lockbox for large-volume customers, provides the most complete solution available for community banks.
